3D Quality Inspection of Sheet Metal Hole Patterns
and Trimmings

Computer-aided quality inspection (CAQ) in combination with optical metrology and a sophisticated inspection software is a fast and simple way to compare 3D scanning results of physical as-built parts to as-designed CAD models. Apart from detecting surface deviations due to certain material properties, warpage, wear and tear or age, position and size deviations of holes and trimmings of metal sheets can also be easily and reliably be identified and quantified.

This kind of quality analysis provides the user with accurate measurement feedback within a matter of minutes to perform corrective adaptations, thus ensuring that parts are manufactured precisely in accordance with their CAD specification.

Applications, Objectives and Advantages of Digital Inspection

  • Holistic inspection approach, i.e. examination of the whole part, rather than selected
    areas or specific points,
thereby providing considerably more comprehensive and
    conclusive inspection results.
  • Identification, visualisation and quantification of tolerances.
  • Verification with regard to dimensional accuracy of the inspected components (e.g. first sample inspection, incoming goods inspection, random inline-production inspection)
  • Validation with regard to shape, position and completeness of drilled holes.
  • Verification with regard to dimensional accuracy of the sheet borderlines (spring back and trimming).
  • Inspection for and documentation of shape deviations caused by inherent material properties, e.g. wear and tear, corrosion, ageing, ....
  • Significant reduction of the inspection time by rapidly conducting automatic first-article inspection
  • Improvement of production efficiency through fast and early troubleshooting and relevant corrective adjustment
